Taxi stories

Quite sadly

corrupt taxi drivers in Prague are one of the biggest problems commonly encountered by all visitors to Prague.

Tourist spots

Don't even think about getting into a taxi that is parked in front of the train station or at a tourist spots. They are waiting for unsuspecting tourists and are known to charge rates several times higher.

Locals

We hate them as much as you do! Czechs hate taxi drivers as much as they despise the police.

Another tip

If you feel that taxi driver will rip you off purposely make a show of writing down taxi registration no. for example to your mobile - you’re a lot less likely to be ripped off.

Call taxi

Be smart and order a taxi by phone from one of these reliable and courteous taxi companies.

drivers. Nightmare: The drivers meter was moving so fast you could hardly read the numbers flying by. In the end he wanted around $50 for a ride we took the day before for $7. We threw in about $10 worth of crown and got out of the cab. I don't suggest doing this anymore. Stories fly around about self locking doors and electric handles (not sure if it's true, but not worth trying). Advice- Anytime you can, have your hotel call a cab for you. If you can, grab a card from the company so you can use them again. Also Avoid cabs that look more like your uncle's old Nova hatchback. lot cheaper.

Generally if you speaks English chances you will get rip off are very high!

Your story

Another Nightmare:

I took a taxi from Hlavni Nadrazi to Dejvice in a taxi that DID NOT have rates posted on the side. The meter had to running at the rate of about a crown per second. The ride cost me about 1200 CZK. The ride I took earlier from the Dejvice to Hlavni Nadrazi cost about 240. Negotiate price before you get into the taxi, AND make sure there are rates posted on the outside of the cab.

We having reports from many tourists that Prague Taxi drivers are happy when they can accept foreign currency. Not because they need it but it is a chance for them to rip you off. So be aware and keep in mind that 1 Pound is not same like 1 CZK .. It seems that many taxi drivers there don't want to know exchange rates.
